Workshop Title: Kenyah folk songs from Borneo applied to music pedagogy and performance

This interactive session featured 5 Kenyah songs, (Ilun Pesak Paku, Sua Ulem, Along, Nai Bilun Merika, Ne lan-e Pu’un) in a variety of scales, and applicable to different levels of music learning. Video-clips of field recordings and stage performances of the songs, will be shown, followed by participatory singing and explorations of their applications in music education guided by Kodály principles.

Update : One of the singers in the video-clip of “Ne lan-e pu’un ( a beautiful re-pentatonic song) was the late Bilong Lupah, who sadly, passed away on July 12th. Can’t believe that just a few years ago he danced the "kanjet kiut" (plate dance) with such agility.

Dedicating this you-tube compilation in his memory

Another song I presented was “Nai Bilun Merika” which recounts events at the end of world war 2 when allied planes dropped supplies to villages near the Kalimantan -Sarawak border. This is a fresh recording (2024) that I managed to record courtesy of Sigau Langat ( a talented singer from Long Moh) and family members and friends who now reside in Miri
